Televised Revolution Podcast – Episode 42

The biggest news story affecting the Aus TV industry this week is not a local one. Instead, it’s from the US as the annual Upfronts take place. The Upfronts are a presentation held by each of the networks that detail their planned schedule for the next TV season (starting there in September). They’re designed to sell their wares to media buyers, major advertisers, and to the industry media. It’s in the build-up to these presentations that we learn which new shows will launch and which shows have been cancelled. With the Australian industry to heavily reliant on US imports, this obviously affects the shows that we are currently running, along with shows that we may see get a run here.

With this in mind, we take the time this week to detail the Upfronts. Which shows have been cancelled, what are the new shows coming, and what were the interesting pilots that never got the greenlight.

Other subjects covered include:

  • The Amazing Race Australia launched and copies The Amazing Race Asia.
  • The Dancing With The Stars tweet controversy.
  • The Adam Boland court case sets a date.

Televised Revolution Podcast – Episode 41

The Televised Revolution Podcast is produced in Brisbane Australia. Around these parts (a subtropical area), there are effectively two seasons every year. There is what I term Summer and Not-Summer. Not-Summer has variations in the weather, but it can never entirely be defined as Autumn, Winter, or Spring. Something resembling Winter kicked in this week, meaning the the panel this week of Dan, Simon, and Dennis, were all hunkered down in our warm threads and prepared to settle in for a televisual winter. So, fire up the soup and microwave up some hot chocolate and join us.

This week the panel discuss:

  • The Federal Budget allocates money for free Digital STB’s for Australian pensioners.
  • The Passing of the man who developed the Teleprompter.
  • The campaign against Andrew Bolt.
  • Optus sign a deal with Fetch TV.

The 400 Club – Episode 16

It’s the quiet before the storm. Next week in the US, viewers are set to experience season finale after season finale as their network season winds down. There will be plenty of new cable series starting in coming weeks, so there shouldn’t be too much of a TV drought at all. With finale’s and new shows starting, we’re going to be pretty busy here at The 400 Club. But this week? Whoa. There were plenty of shows on, but so few had anything really worth discussing.

This week on The 400 Club we focus solely on Community who delivered a sequel to their paintball episode last year ‘Modern Warfare’. This episode, “A Fistful of Paintballs” (S02E23), brings us yet another paintball episode, but with a western theme. Was the episode as progressive and exploratory as Community so often is, or was the writing staff yellow and chickened out by delivering fan service? Listen in.

We also take some time to discuss which shows we plan to catch up on over the TV hiatus. The end of any TV season is a time for TV schedule renewal and it’s time to plan accordingly.

As always, we note that The 400 Club is spoiler-heavy, so if you haven’t seen the episodes in question and are sensitive to being spoiled, we do recommend that you hold off from listening until you see the episode.

400 Club Podcast – Episode 15

It’s the end of an era as we say goodbye to Michael Scott on The Office this week. It’s not quite a series finale, but it certainly draws to a close the character arc of the lead of one of TV’s most beloved ensembles. But, was it a good episode? Dave and Dan take a look this week at this show, consider whether The Killing has a significant flaw at its very center, and have a brief chat about ‘the new Friends’ Happy Endings.

As always, we note that The 400 Club is spoiler-heavy, so if you haven’t seen the episodes in question and are sensitive to being spoiled, we do recommend that you hold off from listening until you see the episode.

The Office (S07E22) ‘Goodbye Michael’ – 02:33

The Killing (S01E06) ‘What Have You Left’ – 22:02

Happy Endings (S01E01 – S01E05) – 31:55

Televised Revolution Podcast – Episode 40

It really has been a massive week. AFL Broadcast Rights were announced, there was a Royal Wedding, Logies, and then there was that Osama business.

This week Dan and Dennis take a look at:

  • The AFL Broadcast Rights announcement
  • The Chasers Royal Wedding commentary has the kybosh put on it by Clarence House
  • Dieter Brummer getting tired and emotional post-Logies.
  • What needs to be done to spruce up the Logie Awards and make them, heaven forbid, watchable.

The Logie improvement discussion stems from this article that Dan wrote on the topic for Crikey. Also, for fans of regular panelist Simon, he will be back in a couple of weeks. Uni commitments are keeping him from podcasting for a while.

The 400 Club Podcast – Episode 14

Do you remember that time that we found ourselves in a studio recording a podcast about TV shows? Yeah, those were some crazy times.

This week on The 400 Club Podcast we take a look at flashback episodes. This week in the US, 30 Rock and Community both aired flashback episodes with each taking a different approach to the idea. The panel have mixed opinions as to how successful they were.

As always, we note that The 400 Club is spoiler-heavy, so if you haven’t seen the episodes in question and are sensitive to being spoiled, we do recommend that you hold off from listening until you see the episode.

Community – Season 2, Episode 21 – “Paradigms of Human Memory” (02:32)

30 Rock – Season 5, Episode 100 – “100? (18:16)

Televised Revolution Podcast – Episode 39

With Easter having just passed and a Royal Wedding at the tail end of this week, it’s an unusual week. All the more unusual for the fact that there’s quite a bit to talk about.

This week Dan and Simon discuss:

  • Adam Boland makes his bid to leave Seven.
  • 4 notable industry veterans pass on.
  • Hulu to launch in Australia?
  • Australians are watching TV on smaller devices

And of course there is much, much more. As always, we look forward to receiving your mail and check us out on the Twitter / Facebook. You can also find the podcast on iTunes (please leave us a review, it helps people find the show).

400 Club Podcast Episode 13

Episode 13? Unlucky?!?!?!? Heavens no. Strap yourselves in for what may be one of our finest hours (though, really it’s a runtime of about 40 minutes). Not only do we get to take a look at three outstanding bits of telly this week, but we also make time to take a moment and offer some crude innuendo.

As always, The 400 Club Podcast is very spoiler heavy, so if you haven’t seen the episodes and are spoiler sensitive, you may want to skip past the reviews of shows you haven’t seen.

This week Dave, Simon, Prue, and Dan discuss:

Game of Thrones – Pilot Episode (5:23)

Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo – Mini-series (19:44)

Parks and Recreation – S03E09 “Andy and April’s Fancy Party” (33:11)

Televised Revolution Podcast – Episode 38

The actions of media companies over the next 18 months will have a long-lasting impact on the strength of their brands as online delivery of content becomes integral to our daily consumption. Will a Ten, Nine, or Seven still be around in a decade, or will newer companies, services, or brands (possibly being run by the organizations that we know today as Ten, Nine, and Seven) be in place delivering us our TV content?

This week SBS announced the name of the man who is set to be their next Managing Director. Michael Ebeid has a history of working with the ABC, Optus, and IBM. On paper he is certainly a very interesting candidate. Will he be the man that can shape and move SBS as it navigates its way through to a potential online future? Of all the FTA channels, SBS is in the strongest position to establish itself as a distinct online brand.

This week on Televised Revolution, Dan and Simon discuss:

  • Michael Ebeid and his appointment to the role of SBS managing Director.
  • One HD unveils its new lineup.
  • Networks compete for AFL broadcast rights.
  • The Chaser deliver new projects.
  • Trevor Bannister passes away.
  • Taxidermy.
